Whether you're planning to hit the road with a trailer or thinking about doing some off-roading, you need an SUV you can count on. Choices like the Jeep Cherokee and Chevy Equinox offer that kind of versatility, but what are they each capable of?

B.Z. Motors Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT (CDJRF) helps drivers in Lewisburg, Sunbury, and Danville find out in this 2020 Jeep Cherokee vs. Chevy Equinox comparison.

2020 Jeep Cherokee vs Chevy Equinox Engines

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee was built to bring you lots of power under the hood of a stylish and dependable SUV. There are three choices for which engine you can use.

The first is a 2.4L Tigershark® MultiAir®2 engine that gets up to 180 horsepower. The second option is both larger and more powerful. It's a 3.2L Pentastar® V6 engine that gets up to 271 horsepower. The third and final option is an impressive 2.0L Turbo engine that can kick out 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

All these engines work alongside a versatile 9-speed automatic transmission. When the power under the hood, transmission, and Variable Valve Timing come together, the Jeep Cherokee is able to tow up to 4,500 pounds for you.

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is not as powerful. Its maximum towing capacity is a full thousand pounds less at 3,500 pounds.

There are a few available engines. However, one of them produces less horsepower than the Cherokee's base engine, while the larger choice still falls behind the most powerful Jeep option.

2020 Jeep Cherokee vs Chevy Equinox Off-Roading

Each one is equipped with a Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System. Using a dial on your console, you can manually adjust the drivetrain between Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes. The 2020 Jeep Cherokee sits on top of a drivetrain that's as capable as ever for taking your SUV off-road. There are multiple 4x4 systems to choose from.

The Jeep Active Drive I 4x4 system has a rear axle disconnect that engages all-wheel drive only when necessary to help your fuel efficiency. The Jeep Active Drive II takes that and adds a low range for increased traction.

Lastly, the Jeep Active Drive Lock 4x4 system features a mechanical rear axle lock for even greater ability climbing over steep, slippery, or uneven terrain. This system also adds Rock Mode to your Traction Management dial.

While the 2020 Chevy Equinox has available all-wheel drive, it doesn't feature the same kind of off-roading capability as these proven 4x4 systems.

2020 Jeep Cherokee vs Chevy Equinox Infotainment System

When you're behind the wheel of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee, an 8.4-inch touchscreen can be at your command. This sits on your dashboard and is home to the Uconnect® infotainment system.

It features integrated voice command for easy Bluetooth® use on hands-free calls and texts, as well as controlling your navigation system. The large screen gives you colorful 3D maps to help guide you.

The large screen also helps you when you're backing up. As soon as you put it in reverse, you'll see the image from your ParkView® Rear Back Up Camera displayed on your dashboard.

To keep you entertained along the way, there's an available 9-speaker Alpine® Premium Audio System that features a 12-channel, 506-watt amplifier and an 8-inch subwoofer.

The 2020 Chevy Equinox also has an infotainment system with a back-up camera and navigation, but it's a little smaller. The standard screen is only seven inches and the upgraded one is still a little smaller at eight inches.
